Boats Owned by Friends
This page contains pictures I have taken of boats owned by friends.  Most of these boats are berthed on the Patuxent River.

Below is the same boat during the summer of 2002 when it  was owned by Scott and Carla Shaw.  They sold the Vega at the end of that summer and purchased a Catalina 36.

This boat has served as the starter boat for three different owners at our dock at Town Creek Landing.  It may well be a starter boat for its current owner as well.

Fairgale, Westerly Longbow

Maverick, One-Off

Click on picture to view at full resolutionThis is Tom Widmer's wooden one-off cruiser, Maverick.  In The first set of pictures Tom is sailing Maverick out of Town Creek in very light winds.  The on-board pictures were taken when I went sailing with Tom and his wife, again in very light winds.  I was surprised how well Maverick moved in these light conditions.

Tom tells me the boat was built for its designer (George Stoner) for him to race.  It is the same length as Sarah, but weighs 5,000 lbs less.  It also has a deep winged keel.  Pretty advanced for a boat built of wood in the 1950s.

Tom and his family successfully sailed Maverick on an Atlantic Circle, similar to my planned cruise, in the late 1970s.

Click on picture to view at full resolutionOver the years Tom has built and installed most of the equipment on Maverick, mostly from non-marine sources (I think he told me the windlass motor came from a B-36 gun turret).  This gives Maverick a few idiosyncrasies for people who are not familiar with the boat.  However, it also means Tom knows how every device on the boat works and what can go wrong - as on this day when a fuel hose disintegrated putting tiny hose fragments into the carburetor of his 40 year old Palmer gasoline engine.  The engine shut down a few times on our sail, but each time it  took Tom only a few minutes to get it started so we could get back to dock and he could thoroughly clean out the fuel system.

Around 2015 this boat was aquired by Mike Repass, who was my crewmate on the first leg of Sarah's Atlantic Circle in 2005.  Maverick still sails out of Town Creek.

Whoosh, Pearson 424

Jack & Patricia Tyler were sailing their P424 for a number of years before I purchased Sarah.  Based on the west coast of Florida, they have completed a very successful extended cruise of the Caribbean.   Over the years since 2002 we have shared a great deal of information on preparing and sailing our yachts on off-shore passages and coastal cruising.  I am much more on the receiving end of Jack's knowledge and experience than he is of mine.  They are now (March, 2008) back in the Caribbean.  Click on the SV Whoosh link at the top of this page to access articles on cruising in Europe written by Jack & Patricia.

I departed a few days later, but continued around the island of Mallorca heading back toward Palma where I would be joined by friends.

Finally, Catalina 34

Seiki II, Custom Alden 56

Ray and Marla Dils' 56' custom motor yacht.  This is one gorgeous-looking boat, but unfortunately the builder, Alden, failed Ray & Marla on just about every detail of the interior of the boat.  From miss-placed sinks to unusable berths it has been one disaster to another.  Not the least disaster is that the boat was delivered over a year later than promised.

Ray stopped at Harbortown in Fort Pierce to see Mike Repass and I off on the Atlantic Circle cruise.  Even now he is discovering builder shortcomings on the boat, but in spite of these issues the boat is still an elegant coastal cruising motor yacht and has fulfilled Ray and Marla's desire for a cruising boat to take them in comfort between their homes on the East Coast.
